Exercise Makes You Fat?

Depending on "who" you read, yes ... and no.

  • There's lots of articles out there that contradict each other:
  • exercise isn't good for you, can make you fatter, can cause you to eat more
  • exercise makes you burn fat, so exercise more
  • exercise makes you eat more, so exercise less
  • do this cardio exercise and you'll burn the most fat
  • building muscle helps you lose fat, so lift weights
  • jog 5 miles a day and you're guaranteed to lose weight
  • don't jog it's bad for your joints
  • walk at a moderate pace for 30 minutes a day
  • workout 3 times a week for 30 minutes each time
  • workout 7 days a week for an hour each time, sweating til you drop

The 1970s and the Grapefruit Diet

I think I said this earlier, but once again, with advent and growth of the internet ... everything old is "new again". Back in the 1970s the grapefruit diet was quite the rage. But the 1970s wasn't the first time around for this wonder-fruit. It had been around roughly 50 years or so, but by the time we'd heard of it, well ... it was a new and wonderful way to get rid of that fat.

It was simple to follow (half a grapefruit before each rather skimpy meal, and for breakfast, that's all you got ... the half a grapefruit), and unless you truly hated grapefruit, it was palatable. I actually love grapefruit and so did mom, so it wasn't much of an issue to add grapefruit to our daily food intake.

Jiggling to be Thin

Yeah, I really did mean "jiggling" and not juggling. That wasn't a typo.

I think at this stage, before I go much further with my journey through dieting, I should mention my mom. If you read my earlier posts, you'll note mention of my mother in many of them. I think perhaps besides the fact that society in general always worshipped that "perfect body", my mom figured prominently in my own thoughts on what I should look like. er, Actually, I suppose they weren't my own thoughts, but my mothers.
